Taylor Schilling opts for classic black jumpsuit as Patricia Arquette wears quirky neon pink shirt dress

Her new film Boyhood highlights the aging process, as it follows its characters over 12 actual years.

But star Patricia Arquette looked very youthful at the film’s New York premiere at the Museum of Modern Art on Monday.

The 46-year-old actress wore a quirky neon pink shirt dress with matching tights at the event also attended by Taylor Schilling, who went for a much more subdued look.

Patricia accessorised with a multi-strand pearl necklace and a shiny white clutch, dressing the look up with grey platform pumps.

Meanwhile, Taylor, 29, looked classic in a black jumpsuit with comfortable black sandals.

The Orange Is The New Black star opted for minimal make-up, adding to the understated elegance of her look.

Taylor got to take in a ground-breaking new film, one shot over the course of 12 years with the same actors.

It follows a boy named Mason (played by Ellar Coltrane) as he ages from six to 18, delving into the emotional progression of growing up as a boy in America.

Mason is estranged from his divorced parents, who are played by Arquette and Ethan Hawke – a struggling mother and a wannabe musician.

There was no script or full plot when director Richard Linklater approached Patricia about the film, asking her, ‘What are you doing for the next 12 years?’

‘When I first heard about it, I was blown away,’ she told The Telegraph.

Patricia accepted the challenges, such as the cast having to find a week each year in everybody’s calendar to resume filming, and the flick not really making sense business-wise.

‘This film does not in any way fit into a business model, especially in America,’ she said. ‘More and more of the business is run by bankers – the smaller movies are gone, pretty much.

‘And there is no obvious demographic for this film: who’s going to want to see a movie about some kids growing up? A grandma?

‘They’re not tunnelling out of a prison or going into outer space – there’s no plot thing that makes it easy to sell.’

Watching the film takes Patricia down memory lane, recalling events from her own life and that of her co-stars.

‘All of that, I see it happening: “That’s right before my daughter was born, that’s when I got married [to Jane], that’s when I got divorced, that’s when Ethan got divorced [from Uma Thurman], that’s when Rick’s babies were just born…”’ she said.

‘”That’s when Ellar’s mom and dad split up, he’s a little sadder there…”‘

Boyhood hits theatres in the US on July 11.
